Okay, so I tried 3 times to get my yeast to get puffy and it just didn't happen. I tried hottish bath water, medium bathwater, and lukewarm bath water temps. I tried honey and I also tried sugar. I left it for around 5 min like you said. What gives? The yeast exp. date was in 2012, so that wasn't it, I think. Help!

ReplyDeleteThe lady who taught me to make bread also told us never to buy the yeast packets because most of the time they won't work. Instead she recommended buying it in bulk like I show in my video. I would recommend maybe trying other packets or getting a bulk package. I buy mine in two 1-lb bags at Sam's Club. for about $6. I bought it over a year ago and am still not done with the first 1-lb bag! I also store it in the freezer- ver important! If its not stored in a cool dry place it will also not work for you. hope that helps!
Cynthia: Also try leaving it for longer, say 10 minutes and see what you get...
ReplyDeleteAh-ha! I was using envelopes that had been in my cupboard in the summer! I don't think I have access to bulk as you mention, but I will get a jar of new yeast and give it a try. I will also keep it in the freezer! Thanks! I will let you know the results!

ReplyDeleteMy bread is in the oven right now. It looks pretty good; but I think I had a problem with the yeast. I'm going to try again with another yeast not from the packet later this week and see how it goes. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI just redid the bread with active yeast (very important). It came out great; Thank You! Also the second time around it had rosemary and we loved it. I'm going to try it with some rosemary infused oil instead of the regular oil to see how that tastes!
DeleteI made this bread last week. We ate some fresh out of the oven...how delicious...the next night bread and butter with dinner, then a couple of days later wonderful garlic toast, and finished it up today with french toast. There's only two of us so it went a long ways. I made it just as you did in the video. I'm looking forward to trying it different ways, by adding herbs and other stuff...and going to try it using all white flour. I really like the wheat in it, but maybe all white will make it a little less dense. By the way, anyone who thinks bread making is hard should try this recipe...it's really easy.
